Did you ever do that when you were a kid? Count down your location, starting from the farthest point? I used to all the time, and as I did it, I’d try to come up with as many alternate phrases for each location. For instance, Earth would also be “Third-Plant-From-the-Sun.” As if I was giving directions to some alternate life form that would come and save me, from what I thought was my tortuous life.

The Pottery WheelSpeaking with my mother consistently provides the necessary motivation to prove her wrong. Choosing my spring semester courses was hardly any different. After I informed her I would be taking a wheelwork pottery course, my senior year attempt at goofing off, she instantly assured me I would fail. “It’s the only course in college that I ever dropped,” she remarked casually, so casually that I instantly took up arms.
